Squarespace

Squarespace sites, engineered past the template

Squarespace sites for teams that want to edit everything themselves. Structure is planned before design, the platform is extended with custom CSS and code where it helps, and a written editing guide keeps the site consistent long after your team takes it over.

Is it the right call?

When it’s the right call

  • One or two people will update the site and want it to be easy
  • You want hosting, security and updates handled by the platform
  • The site is mainly pages, a portfolio, bookings or a small shop
  • An existing Squarespace site looks dated or performs poorly

When it isn’t

  • You need custom data structures, integrations or complex publishing We’d suggest: WordPress with custom blocks
  • A large catalog or orders that sync with inventory systems We’d suggest: WooCommerce

Standard equipment

What we usually hand over on a project like this. Your proposal lists exactly what’s included.

  • Squarespace

  • JavaScript
  1. Site structure and content plan

Pages, navigation and search foundations planned before design starts.

  2. Designed Squarespace site

Layouts and styles refined with custom CSS, so the site reads as yours rather than a template.

  3. Code extensions

Code injection for analytics, structured data and small features the platform lacks.

  4. Accessibility review

Tested against WCAG 2.2 AA, with platform limits documented honestly.

  5. Editing guide

How to add pages, update content and keep the design consistent.

What we build

Sites for service businesses, studios, restaurants and practices where the team wants control without a developer on call. We use Squarespace’s own blocks where they work, and custom CSS, structured data and code injection where they fall short, without making the site harder to edit.

Knowing the limits

Squarespace is a closed platform, and some layouts and integrations are out of reach. If you outgrow it, we move the site to WordPress or a custom build, with redirects in place.

Questions about Squarespace

How do we know when we’ve outgrown Squarespace?

The signs are workarounds: content copied by hand between pages, integrations held together by third-party services, or a store that needs inventory sync. When the workarounds cost more time than they save, it is time to move. WordPress or WooCommerce is usually the next step, or a custom build if the site needs accounts and workflows.

Can you add custom code to a Squarespace site?

Yes, within the platform’s limits: we add custom CSS, code injection and code blocks for analytics, structured data, design refinements and small features. Squarespace does not allow server-side code or changes to core templates, so we set out what is and is not possible before the build starts.

Can Squarespace run our online store?

Squarespace can run your store if the catalog is small, shipping is straightforward and nothing needs to sync with inventory. Squarespace Commerce handles products, checkout and payments inside the same editor your team already uses. If orders must flow into accounting or ERP systems, WooCommerce is usually the better fit, and we can plan that move when you need it.

Can a Squarespace site meet WCAG 2.2 AA?

A Squarespace site can meet most of WCAG 2.2 AA, but a few built-in components can’t be changed. We choose blocks and layouts that work with a keyboard and screen reader, set headings, alt text and contrast properly, and test before launch; where a platform component falls short, we document it and suggest a workaround rather than claim full conformance.

Every build, any stack

One standard.

  1. Performance

A performance budget is set before launch and enforced on every change.

  2. Accessibility

Built to WCAG 2.2 AA and tested against it, with automated checks and manual keyboard and screen-reader passes on client builds.

  3. Security

Least-privilege access, secrets kept out of code, dependencies monitored and security headers configured.

  4. Handover

Accounts and repositories in your name from day one. The code and documentation are yours under the signed agreement, written so another team could take over.
